You want to know everything necessary to take a trip into wild backcountry? No matter if you seek to explore the wildernesses of North  America or the hinterland of Austria, with these backcountry navigation and camping basics you’ll have the foundation and orientation you need. Join and learn how to work with a compass, read maps, pack efficiently and act informed in backcountry terrain and in regards to wildlife.

Workshop Schedule

Arrival Day (optional)

  • 17:00 transfer from train station / arrival in Nasswald
  • Check-in basic or glamping tents
  • 18:00 intro circle
  • campfire & dinner
  • discussion: prepping for a wilderness trip

Day #1: MAP & COMPASS

  • 08:00 breakfast
  • 09:00 Introduction into Map Reading: Terrain, Altitude, Legend
  • 10:30 How to plan a river trip, mountain hike or multi day trek with a map 
  • 13:00 lunch
  • Introduction into using a compass
  • Setting a march number
  • Locating yourself with a map and compass
  • dinner and campfire

Day #2: FIELD PRACTICE

  • 08:00 breakfast
  • Finding places: hiking with a march number
  • 13:00 lunch
  • Crossing obstacles without loosing course
  • 18:00 transfer to train station
